Continuing Education Requirements for License Renewal

The Indiana Real Estate Commission (IREC) requires that a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education be completed every two years in order to renew a real estate license.  The Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors(MIBOR)encourages members to keep their real estate licenses current by obtaining the required continuing education early in the renewal period.

Listed below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions concerning continuing education required by the Indiana Real Estate Commission.

When must I have my 16 hours of continuing education in order to renew my license?

Broker licensees must obtain their 16 hours of education in the two year window preceding June 30th of each odd numbered year (i.e. June 30th, 2013). Salespersons must obtain their 16 hours of education by June 30th of each even numbered year (i.e. June 30, 2012).

When does my license expire?

License renewals must be processed by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA) no later than June 30th of the year you renew, or your license is not active.

How many hours of CE do I need?

Each licensee must have at least 16 hours of IREC approved continuing education for license renewal. IREC requires that at least six of these hours be core subjects, with a minimum of two hours in three different subjects.

What are the core subjects?

Indiana licensure and escrow law, Indiana agency law, fair housing and civil rights law, listing contracts and purchase agreements, settlement procedures, antitrust, environmental issues, ethics and standards. Remember - you must have two hours in three different subjects.

May I take any of the CE classes online?

Yes -the Indiana Real Estate Commission has now approved distance education.

Do I send my CE certificates to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency with my license renewal?

You do not need to send your certificates unless audited by the IPLA. However, you must certify on your license renewal form that you have obtained the 16 hours required for renewal.

Will the broker licensing class count toward my CE requirement?

No - the broker and salesperson courses do not qualify as continuing education.

Do I need to take CE if my license is in Referral status?

No.

How do I activate an inactive license?

If you are reactivating your license at the time of license renewal, you must have obtained all of the required 16 hours of CE.

If you are reactivating during the two year renewal period, you must obtain the 6 hours of core hours before reactivating, and then must obtain the additional 10 hours of electives prior to your renewal period deadline.

If I obtain more than 16 hours of CE during my renewal period, may I count the extra hours toward my next renewal period?

No.  IREC Rules do not permit this.

How long must I retain my CE certificates?

It is the responsibility of each licensee to retain certification to support the courses taken for 4 years after the end of the renewal period in which the courses were taken.

How do I know if a course is approved for IREC credit?

Each school receives an approval letter as IREC approves the course. If you are in doubt, ask to see a copy of the approval letter.
