Call for estimates from 3-4 professional moving
companies. Make sure when speaking with movers to have them itemize
packing, loading and special charges and insurance. If you have the
movers do the packing, make sure to schedule them to pack 1-3 days before
the actual move. If you move yourself, order adequate boxes, packing
materials and tape. Give the mover a telephone number and address
where you can be reached during the move.

Inventory your possessions. TIME TO CLEAN UP,
CLEAN OUT, DONATE or THROW OUT your possessions. Have a Garage
Sale!

Arrange for short-term storage if you will need it.

Pick up a U.S. Postal Service change of address
kit. Alert family and friends of your moving date and give them your
new address and phone number if known.

Find copies of all your important records: medical,
dental, insurance, legal, accounting, taxes, veterinarian records, etc. and
pack in a well marked box.

Contact your tax advisor and review potential moving
related tax deductions and potential tax liability.

Make arrangements with schools for record transfers
for your children.

Make travel arrangements for family and pets.
Confirm arrangements one week before the move.

Make plans for young children to be cared for on
moving day.

Pack items you won't be using immediately or that
will go into storage.

Contact utilities - order termination and turn on
for your occupancy date.

Terminate newspaper delivery (and any other delivery
service you have.)

Prepare your vehicles for the trip to your new home
- check tires, have the oil changed, etc. if needed.

Confirm new bank accounts by phone and fax.

Fill any necessary prescriptions and medications
needed for the next couple of weeks.

Defrost refrigerator/freezer and either use or give
away food. Plan simple meals or eat out during the move.

Pick up cash for your trip and have a certified
check for mover's invoice.

Pack signed bill of lading and inventory where they
can be easily located at your destination.

Carefully mark LAST BOX PACKED-FIRST BOX UNPACKED
containing items you'll need right away, like garage door opener, tools and
window shades.
